Three months after the devastating earthquake in Haiti, the first batch of four schools led by the Ministry of Education in Haiti will soon be completed. This is the first step of an ambitious project that still requires funding to be implemented

A few more bricks, a little putty, and a layer of paint-in the tropical afternoon heat, Renel Begrade is hurriedly completing the Notre Dame de Lamercie school in the Fonds-des-Nègres commune This is one of the areas most severely affected by the Haiti earthquake in August.

More than 2,000 people have died, 1,200 schools have been destroyed, and thousands of school children are facing food insecurity. In Haiti, 345,000 children depend on the World Food Programme(WFP) for daily school meals.

"We must hurry up, everything must be ready for the first batch of students to return within a few weeks," said the mason who was born in the village.

The school accommodates more than 200 students, and the walls cannot withstand a magnitude 4.6 earthquake. "That day was the worst day of my life...everyone shed tears," Renel said, adding: "Of course, I don't think we will be able to start school here for a long time.

"We are rebuilding a strong building. For me, working on this website means that I can make enough money to pay for my children's school fees."

Ensuring that thousands of children return to the classroom is a government priority. They are cut off from education, playgrounds, and school cafeterias for daily meals.

“When we heard that we were going to get help to rebuild the school, there were smiles on the faces of students, teachers and everyone in the community,” said Etienne Molière, the head of the school. "This will help heal some of the scars left by the earthquake... We look forward to the inauguration of the new building."

In the past three months, with the support of the World Food Program (WFP), the Ministry of Education, its emergency response team and the School Engineering Bureau have been working hard to restore the destroyed school in record time, despite the earthquake , The insecurity caused by gang violence and the fuel crisis that hindered the entry and progress of the construction site.

Due to a simple design of the World Food Program, a temporary structure has been established, which may be transformed into a permanent structure.

The module includes a classroom, kitchen and storage space, and can be expanded to include other classrooms.

The Haitian government has mobilized local authorities and water, sanitation and hygiene agencies, and is cooperating with the private sector, United Nations organizations and non-governmental organizations to solve problems such as ways to clean up garbage.

“We have to take into account the risk of natural disasters in the area. Therefore, thanks to the engineering team, the reconstructed school is able to withstand earthquakes and hurricanes,” said Tanguy Armand, head of infrastructure in Haiti at the World Food Programme, who emphasized the new construction. Modern design. "The space is ventilated, bright, and provides access for people with limited mobility. We have seen an increase in the number of new enrollments."

The first four schools have received funding from Switzerland, and each school has a budget of up to US$80,000. By the end of 2022, the World Food Program, with the support of the Haitian Ministry of Education, hopes to rebuild 190 schools in the three departments, but it urgently needs to raise more than 16 million US dollars.

At the same time, Renel proudly completed the construction of one of the first rebuilt schools. In a few days, he will accompany his son back to school, and they will remember it. "I really thought that the school's doors would remain closed this year-but with this project, life started again," he said.
